Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the specialized area of dentistry which handles the treatment of
problems in the alignment of teeth and jaws. An attractive smile can increase
self confidence; with regular dental checkups and care, your smile will last you
a lifetime. An orthodontic problem is called a malocclusion, meaning crooked
or protruding teeth which do not fit together properly.
Dr. Afsharis method uses the benefits of interceptive orthodontic treatment
with functional appliance therapy. His combination approach to fixed and
functional appliances along with his no extraction point of view have given
his orthodontic patients maximum benefits in a shorter amount of time. Also, Dr.
Afshari approaches his orthodontic diagnosis from a facial profile point of
view. He sets his treatment goals to create not just straight teeth, but
beautiful faces and healthy temporomandibular joints.
TMJ Treatment
"TMJ" stands for TemporoMandibular Joint, or the jaw joint. You have two TMJs,
one in front of each ear, connecting the lower jaw bone (the mandible) to the
skull. The joints allow movement up and down, side to side, and forward and
backall the mobility necessary for biting, chewing and swallowing food, for
speaking and for making facial expressions.
Temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders, commonly called TMJ, are a
collection of poorly understood conditions characterized by pain in the jaw and
surrounding tissues and limitations in jaw movements. Injury and conditions that
routinely affect other joints in the body, such as Arthritis, also affect the
temporomandibular joint.
Dr. Afshari has had extensive training in all aspects of TMJ treatment. He also
has a network of specialists that he works with in order to provide optimal
treatment of TMJ.
